3Rs of Waste Management

Did you know that a single household has approximately 2.50 kilograms of waste per day? It is more than 820 kilograms of waste per year to a single household only! With these junks piling up each year, waste management could greatly help, not only to our environment but also with our health.  If you are thinking how you can help our environment, here are simple answers – implement waste management: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

REDUCE

The most important thing you can do is to reduce your generated waste.  Your goal is to lessen the garbage that you are throwing. Do this by changing a few things in your way of life. Here are some of the hassle free ways to be able to reduce waste. These simple steps can also help you to save money.
  •  Avoid using disposable items when possible, such as plastic cups on your coffee break. Instead, use mug or tumbler that can be washed.
  • Redefine your shopping styles. Why don't you try to bring your own eco bag or paper bag so that you can reduce the use of plastic bags for your purchased items?
  • Just buy things you really need, just enough to prevent the disposal of leftovers.
  • Buy durable and long lasting products so that you won't need to replace it as often. Like florescent compact bulbs instead of incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs require heat for it to light and this heat waste nearly 90% of electricity. The florescent bulb, on the other hand, makes less heat.
  • Stay healthy and slim with basic exercise like walking or using the bike to go office or going to the business meeting. This saves you more on gas and helps reduce air pollution.
  • Turn off lights when not in use.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Also it is recommended better to use the pail and pail dipper when taking a bath instead of the shower.

    REUSE

Reuse things that you can still use. From computers to paper, many other things can be used again.
    • In the office or at home, set your printer to “print on both sides” of the paper to maximize the paper usage. You can also use scratch papers on printing draft reports or use paper with print on just one side of the page as a scratch. In this way you can save paper and ink.
    • Instead of using a “single-use” battery, why not accumulate money to buy a rechargeable battery instead?
    • Trade or give away old clothes, books, cds and dvds in stores ot junkshop receiving
    • If you’ve got broken appliances why not get an electrician to fix it rather replacing them immediately or discarding them totally?
    • For materials that cannot be used anymore, be creative and seek for other alternatives to maximize its usage or better yet just give it to others who can actually make something out of it. The charities welcome donations of old tools and appliances but be certain that it is still working before giving it then out.
    • You can trade or give away old clothes, books, CDs and DVDs in stores or junkshops.
    • You can also earn by gathering your old clothing and equipments and conduct a garage sale or ukay-ukay. Remember the pharse “one man’s trach is another man’s treasure”.

    RECYCLE

In recycling process, you must bring the materials to areas where they may create new product from your trash. You would be surprised when you find out that many things can be recycled today. The recycled plastics are used to make common use around the house such as carpet. However, you can recycle at home or at work by:
    • Buy products made from recycled materials such as paper and cardboard. Do not buy products that are not packed with environment-friendly materials such as plastics or Styrofoam. Find the recycling symbol. This symbol can mean one or two is made out of recycled material or the item can be recycled again.
    • Segregate the trash and put labels like: Paper, Cardboard, plastic and cans / bottles.
    • Use your imagination by creating new projects using old materials such as balikbayan / package boxes and make photo frames or pen holders out of it.

Remember that in reducing, reusing and recycling you can save money also. So, before you dispose anything, ask yourself first if the item can still be of any use or check if you can still reduce or reuse its package.

Tour to Baguio City - Philippine Summer Capital

Ever since my youngest brother left for college this year, we occasionally go up and down the mountain ranges of cordillera. He is currently studying at Baguio City and now living alone… Good for him! ^.^
This not my first time there in Baguio, it’s been almost 10 years ago since I got my first view of the breath taking mountain scenery and I’ve never even thought about going back to and fro like what we did in the last few months. And even though I’ve been there most of the time, sight of the beautiful mountains never fails to amaze me. It was always raining there, especially in the afternoon (June to October wet season). I was joking around my son when the fog came down, I told him to go and taste the cloud to see how it taste like. “It taste like clouds!” he would answer.

So, have you ever wondered if a location so close to the clouds ever get battered up by storm or typhoons? Luckily, Baguio is nested around mountains that lessen the surge of storm clouds but you should hear the thunder! ^.^

Baguio was established by the Americans in the late 1900 and was declared as the summer capital of the Philippines on 1903. Why summer capital you ask? Since Baguio is approximately 1500 meters above sea level, the temperature here is cold compared to the lowlands. Therefore, during summer tourist go to Baguio to escape the heat. This is also the reason why one of the main trades is tourism. You could always see souvenir stores.

I would never miss the 3 for 100 (pesos) items there. The choco flakes, garlic chips (my husbands favorite), peanut brittle, brooms, ube jam, knitted bags and clothing and of course who would forget the strawberries and super fresh vegetables! Planning to shop but got low budget? Why not go to the U.K. (ukay-ukay)? All you need to have is patience and digging expertise. ^.^

Side Note 1: Okay, I won’t be talking about why vegetable is good for your health since it pretty much so obvious and common that it is already present in your IQ. But did you know that strawberries contain disease-fighting phytochemicals called Quercetin that destroy cancer cells, high antioxidant and vitamin C? well, now you know! Be sure to eat it fresh and raw to get all its benefits.

Side Note 2: Baguio is derived from ibaloi (native dialect in Benguet ) word bagiw which means ‘moss’.

If you are planning to visit Baguio you can travel by air or land. We always travel by land since it is only 3-4 hours away from Nueva Ecija. We either take the Kennon road and Marcos Highway. Did you know that Kennon Road was built my Filipino and Japanese workers? And this is the fastest route to Baguio but since it twists all the way through a narrow, sharp curved roads it is also dangerous to travel here especially when it is raining due to landslide. Marcos Highway or the Aspiras-Palispis highway takes about 15 more minutes compared to Kennon Road but it is safer.

Not Another "Quit Cigarette Smoking" Article

I just wanted to share with you one experience I have that I can’t really understand. There was this one time when I was still working, I was on my way to work and it was 6:30 in the morning. I was waiting for a jeepney to ride on to when I notice this smoking guy who was also waiting for a ride ahead of me. I observe him since he wasn’t looking; he was mindlessly huffing and puffing his cigarette. I covered my nose with my ever-ready hanky since the wind blew his smoke towards me. He turned and looked at me LIKE he was “OH SOO COOL” with his cigarette. (He wishes!)

To make my story, the Jeepney came by and I got on and to my surprise the smoker guy was right in front of me, throwing his cigarette butt and blowing his last smoke outside the window. As we travel along the traffic highways, a huge 10-wheeler smoke-belching truck passed as by leaving this dark horrid smoke. (One disadvantage of riding a jeep, open air.) And guess who first complained?! Oh, yes! The smoker guy covering his mouth and nose. Mumbling about how trucks like that should be caught and shouldn’t be used anymore. I was really confused there!
Okay, first of all, I’m not a smoker and I have issues with a person who smokes irresponsibly in public. I wouldn’t be the first to say this but cigarette is FATAL! And from all the government warnings (ahem… Mr. President), ex-smokers with lung cancer or Dr. Oz warnings, its still not enough to stop most of you from doing it!

Okay, okay… I don’t want to be someone who condemns smokers to hell here. I do have friends and relatives who do smoke and I love them all dearly. And I understand how hard it is for them to just leave this bad habit.

I do have my fair share with this stuff, when I was still in college, me and my other 3 girlfriends tried to learn how to smoke. Back then I think that smoking is cool and I admire women who hold their cigarette elegantly. I tried 2 weeks, 1 cigarette a day. I didn’t like it. Why?

    1. I really hate smoke.
    2. My hand stinks after smoking.
    3. My breath stinks after smoking.
    4. I don’t find the relevance of wasting money for smoke.
For a pack of cigarette I could buy 1.5 Coke instead. ^.^
    5. I know deep inside... its not a good thing.

LESSON TO NON-SMOKERS WHO ARE PLANNING TO SMOKE:

The magic word here is CHOICE! It's your life... your decision. Once you're addicted to it it's hard to quit. And congratulations you'll never grow old! ^.^ Even though most of your peers are doing it, it doesn't mean you should too. You have the choice to say NO and help save lives.

    LESSON TO SMOKERS:

The magic word here is still CHOICE! It's your life... but guess what, people and nature are affected too. Do you really think that smoking is just YOUR problem? Think again. It's your decision.

Side note: Smoke of a cigarette has approximately 4000 chemicals that are very harmful to the environment. it is so harmful that study shows that is is 10 times greater that what your diesel powered car is emitting.

"I don't care about my health, so why do you expect me to care about others?"

I know this is just another "Quit Smoking" campaign and probably won't budge hard-core smoker out there but I'll tell you this... stop and think about it. Just think about it... Smoking is FATAL... not just to yourself but also to your love ones and the environment. If this post and all other warnings doesn't stop you, then cancer will.

Living The Life at Nueva Ecija

    “Pag-ako nagka-farm!” this i
s what my father use to tell us 10 years ago. We always tease him as to when will this farm exist. He would always tell us that if he will be the one to plant and grow a certain fruit, it would be more delicious than what we were buying at the store. Now, my dad is living his dreams even though there are still so many thing to develop.

After a year or two, my father bought this 1 ½ hectare rice field at San Jose, Nueva Ecija. Nueva Ecija is not only known for its main product which is the rice, it is also famous and a top producers of other vegetable crops such as onions (tanduyong a variety of onion), tomatoes, squash, eggplant and garlic.

He named the farm, Finiama Farm as a joke to my mom who is like a Lion when she is mad. According to him, Finiama is a word from Africa, which means ‘pride rock’, or lion’s lair. This is where my father envisions himself to spend most of his time after his retirement.

For one and a half hectares, there are loads of products planted here. To name some there’s guapple, chico, pomelo, jackfruit, papaya, tomato, eggplant and petchay. But the primary product here is mango, banana and rice.

My own family and me live near the city at Cavite. From there you could only see neighbor houses, vehicles, a very few trees, dogs and cats. Whenever the weather is good I let my son play outside the streets with kids at his own age. It’s the same view for him everyday here at our place. So most of the time I bring him over to his grandparents place at Nueva Ecija and I can see why my son is totally in love with the place. It’s adventure and freedom. He totally enjoy the grass on his feet and how get gets excited on wearing his “uniform” to go to the field.

Life at the farm compared to the life here at the city is a total bliss. It is a total haven for me. Simple, peaceful and healthy living, best of what nature has got to offer. Living on a farm gives you a healthy environment to live in contrast to living on the city where population and pollution are high. And did you know that fresh air is good for you? Of course you do! ^.^

Fresh air offers more oxygen, since it doesn’t have pollutant in it. This kind of air cleans out our lungs, clean lungs means more oxygen for us to inhale and increased oxygen produces more energy. Our brain needs the 20% of oxygen to function. So if we are breathing fresh air, we are supplying great amount of oxygen to our brain thus we can think better than we could before.

Lesson: If you are planning to divorce your wife/husband, go grab some fresh air first, this might help you think clearly and save your relationship! Lol!

Finiama Farm is also blessed with a beautiful mountain scenery and an amazing sunrise view. I therefore conclude, that living a simple farm based life is highly recommended! Especially if you have children. Here, you can enjoy the gifts of nature, you can nurture them yourself and literally eat the fruits of your labor! ^.^
