Tour to Baguio City - Philippine Summer Capital

Ever since my youngest brother left for college this year, we occasionally go up and down the mountain ranges of cordillera. He is currently studying at Baguio City and now living alone… Good for him! ^.^
This not my first time there in Baguio, it’s been almost 10 years ago since I got my first view of the breath taking mountain scenery and I’ve never even thought about going back to and fro like what we did in the last few months. And even though I’ve been there most of the time, sight of the beautiful mountains never fails to amaze me. It was always raining there, especially in the afternoon (June to October wet season). I was joking around my son when the fog came down, I told him to go and taste the cloud to see how it taste like. “It taste like clouds!” he would answer.

So, have you ever wondered if a location so close to the clouds ever get battered up by storm or typhoons? Luckily, Baguio is nested around mountains that lessen the surge of storm clouds but you should hear the thunder! ^.^

Baguio was established by the Americans in the late 1900 and was declared as the summer capital of the Philippines on 1903. Why summer capital you ask? Since Baguio is approximately 1500 meters above sea level, the temperature here is cold compared to the lowlands. Therefore, during summer tourist go to Baguio to escape the heat. This is also the reason why one of the main trades is tourism. You could always see souvenir stores.

I would never miss the 3 for 100 (pesos) items there. The choco flakes, garlic chips (my husbands favorite), peanut brittle, brooms, ube jam, knitted bags and clothing and of course who would forget the strawberries and super fresh vegetables! Planning to shop but got low budget? Why not go to the U.K. (ukay-ukay)? All you need to have is patience and digging expertise. ^.^

Side Note 1: Okay, I won’t be talking about why vegetable is good for your health since it pretty much so obvious and common that it is already present in your IQ. But did you know that strawberries contain disease-fighting phytochemicals called Quercetin that destroy cancer cells, high antioxidant and vitamin C? well, now you know! Be sure to eat it fresh and raw to get all its benefits.

Side Note 2: Baguio is derived from ibaloi (native dialect in Benguet ) word bagiw which means ‘moss’.

If you are planning to visit Baguio you can travel by air or land. We always travel by land since it is only 3-4 hours away from Nueva Ecija. We either take the Kennon road and Marcos Highway. Did you know that Kennon Road was built my Filipino and Japanese workers? And this is the fastest route to Baguio but since it twists all the way through a narrow, sharp curved roads it is also dangerous to travel here especially when it is raining due to landslide. Marcos Highway or the Aspiras-Palispis highway takes about 15 more minutes compared to Kennon Road but it is safer.
